At a glance: Cammino di Oropa covers 64 km over 4 stages. It is a point-to-point route of easy–moderate difficulty in Piedmont. Best season: April–October. Accommodation: €20–35 per night.

The classic Cammino di Oropa runs for 64 km from Santhià to the Sanctuary of Oropa. Four increasingly hilly stages move from the rice plains into the Biella Alps, with manageable distances, dependable waymarking and a well-established accommodation network.

The final stage provides the mountain finish: Oropa sits at nearly 1,200 metres, and staying within the sanctuary complex is an unusually memorable end to the walk.

The credential costs €5. Movimento Lento, the association maintaining the route, also offers accommodation-booking support — helpful for overseas walkers arranging the trip without fluent Italian.

B&Bs, hostels, campsites and sanctuary guesthouses cover the route. Graglia and Oropa both offer simple pilgrim-style rooms, while Casa del Movimento Lento in Roppolo is a natural first-night stop.

Frequently asked questions
How many days does the Cammino di Oropa take?

Four days is the standard plan from Santhià; fit walkers sometimes combine it into three. An extra night at Oropa is worthwhile if travel plans allow.

Is it a good first multi-day walk?

Yes. Daily distances hover around 15 km and the difficulty builds gradually. The final climb needs some fitness, but the route is unusually easy to organise.

Can I stay at the Sanctuary of Oropa?

Yes. The sanctuary has a large guesthouse with rooms at several price points. It has plenty of capacity, though booking remains sensible in summer and at weekends.
