The Via Peuceta is the best-known branch of the Cammino Materano: roughly 170 km from the Basilica of San Nicola in Bari to the Sassi of Matera. It crosses the Alta Murgia through dry-stone landscapes, masserie and handsome inland towns including Bitetto, Altamura and Gravina.
The finish is exceptional. The path enters Matera through the ravine, revealing the Sassi after a week of open country. Waymarking, credentials and a dedicated hospitality network make the route relatively straightforward to organise.
It is also good value. Hostels and pilgrim accommodation often cost €20–25, with some donativo options. Spring and autumn are the natural seasons; the exposed Murgia is brutally hot in July and August.

Hostels, religious guesthouses, donativo stays and village B&Bs cover the Via Peuceta. The pilgrim network keeps costs low, but the longest stages leave few last-minute alternatives.
How long is the Via Peuceta?
It covers about 170 km from Bari to Matera, normally split into seven stages averaging roughly 25 km.
When should I walk it?
Choose spring or autumn: March to June and September to November. The Alta Murgia has little shade, so July and August are best avoided.
Where do walkers stay?
The route uses hostels and pilgrim guesthouses from around €20–25, donativo accommodation and ordinary B&Bs. Reserve ahead in the smaller stage towns.
