Murgia Timone and rock-churches loop

The loop leaves the Sasso Caveoso, drops into the Gravina canyon and climbs the far side to the Belvedere di Murgia Timone, the viewpoint from which the whole of Matera is photographed. It then follows the plateau rim past the rock churches of Madonna delle Tre Porte and San Falcione before turning towards Jazzo Gattini, home of the Murgia Materana park visitor centre.

The return passes Madonna delle Vergini and Madonna degli Angeli and drops back to the Sassi. Paths are rock and beaten earth with no shade: carry water and wear shoes with a proper tread. Check the Gravina crossing locally, as the footbridge and the stepped sections can be closed after heavy rain.
