The Sassi are the starting point: the Gravina canyon and the Murgia park with its rock churches begin a hundred metres from the centre.

Matera is the most unusual base on this list: you sleep in the Sassi and walk out of the centre. Cross the Gravina on the suspension footbridge and you are already in the Murgia Materana park, among rock churches, Neolithic villages and the Belvedere looking back at the city.

It is also the finish of the Cammino Materano: walkers who have done it in stages can use Matera for a few extra days of short loops. By bike the Murgia lends itself to white-road rides between sheepfolds and farmsteads; avoid the middle of the day in summer.
