Murgia white roads: Trasano, Tempa Rossa and Bosco del Comune

A mountain-bike loop on the plateau east of Matera, almost entirely on white roads and tracks between farmsteads and jazzi, the dry-stone sheepfolds that give many local place names. From the centre you climb to Jazzo Gattini and carry on towards Trasano and Tempa Rossa through pasture and dry-stone walls.

The southern half takes in the Iazzo del Comune, the Bosco del Comune and the Grotta dei Pipistrelli before returning to town past the rock church of San Francesco a Chiancalata. Some rough surfaces and no fountains en route: start with full bottles and check access to the park areas.
